MS. SHAISTA ABBASI

Middle School Science teacher, Middle School Coordinator

Salaams! My name is Shaista Abbasi and I am currently the Middle School Science teacher and Middle School Coordinator here at Tarbiyah. I was born and grew up in Manchester, U.K. and graduated from the University of Manchester, U.K. with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. I also hold a Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Science, grades 7-12, from Loyola University, Maryland. This is my 15th teaching year, and I have been teaching at Tarbiyah Academy from the very beginning of the school.
I came to Tarbiyah Academy as a parent and educator looking for a school that incorporates best practices in education with a student-centered environment. Building student relationships and teaching the whole child is important to me and the philosophy of the school sold me into teaching here. I am totally invested in the IB model. Teaching children to be internationally minded and develop an awareness of the world they live in while building their character and academics is very powerful. I also love the high standards we expect at the school. Teachers are always looking for ways to utilize best practices whether that’s with the use of relevant technology, small group instruction, collaborative group work or flexible classroom seating. My favorite LP is reflective because we can’t grow or make change if we don’t reflect on our learning and experiences. Reflection is a powerful life-long practice. Without reflection, there is no learning. I also connect myself with Inquirer. It is important for me to be able to look for answers when I do not know something. It helps me grow.
Some fun facts about me; I am married , I have two daughters and a cat. My family are all Potterheads! (Harry Potter fans). I love to read, and I will often read multiple books at once. I learned three languages in school (French, German and Urdu). I enjoy cooking, watching period drama or cooking shows, indoor cycling and taking care of my growing plant family.
